NEW DIY Camper Build: Designing My Custom 6×10 Overland Trailer

How Audrey Learned to Ride Bike by Riding with Dad
July 15, 2025The first thing I decided to change on the Trek Wahoo was the tires. It might not sound like much, but it completely shifted how the bike felt, and honestly, it was the first moment the whole “Carrera” concept started to click.
I swapped the old trail tires for a pair of Maxxis Grifter 2.5” slicks. These things are big, fast, and surprisingly light. They look and feel like a BMX tire like I remember riding when I was young. They’re designed more for pavement and pump tracks than rough trails, which is exactly what I want. I am looking to get off work and go for a street cruise down by the river or hook the kids up behind me and take them for a spin.
With the Grifters on, the bike instantly felt quicker and more responsive on city streets. The rolling resistance dropped way down. It is insane what a set of smooth tires will do to a mountain bike. And the added width gave it this aggressive, stance. It didn’t just ride better, it looked better, too.

Why Tires First?
I wanted the Carrera build to feel purposeful. Not just a parts-bin project, but a transformation. Changing the tires was a simple move, but it was foundational. It helped me shift the mindset from “old MTB” to “urban cruiser.”
This was also a budget-friendly way to get motivated. Tires were around $90 for the pair, and they made me excited to ride again. That’s the kind of win I look for on projects like this, something that makes an immediate difference without blowing the budget early.

What’s Next?
My official upgrade list seems long, but I think its doable.
1×11 speed drivetrain
Rigid front fork
Lights
Gold chain
Silver color-match paint to my 996
