August 19, 2025Step 1: The Foundation

Introduction – Building the Base for Adventure
The Prairie 610 camper build has officially begun! This first step is all about constructing the wood foundation that will later be bolted to a steel trailer frame.
The reason I am starting with the wood foundation first is basically because I lack room to have a frame in my garage, along with all my vehicles, until this fall. I wanted to get the build going, as soon as my car goes into storage, I will get a trailer frame welded up and then bolt the foundation to it. In the meantime, I can get the start of the build going.
Whether you’re building your own overland camper, teardrop trailer, or off-grid tiny home, a solid foundation is the key to long-term durability and comfort. My last build I just used 3×5 plywood and it worked fine for what we used it for. This time I have added rigid foam insulation, I think this will allow us to camp in more diverse conditions and remain comfortable inside the camper.
Why the Foundation Matters in a Camper Build
The foundation sets the tone for the entire build. If it’s not square, level, and secure, you’ll fight issues with fitment and stability all the way through the project.
For the Prairie 610, I wanted a base that was:
- Rigid and square for structural integrity.
- Insulated for year-round use.
- Ready to bolt directly to a steel trailer frame.
- 6’x10′ This will allow me to fit a family of 4
Materials Used for the Camper Foundation
- Pressure-treated lumber for framing.
- 15/32″ plywood for decking.
- Rigid foam board insulation.
- Exterior-rated screws and construction adhesive.

Step-by-Step Foundation Build Process
1. Layout and Cutting
I began by cutting all the frame pieces to length using my miter saw. Laying out each piece dry ensured accurate fitment before assembly.
2. Framing the Base
I assembled the outer frame and cross-members using exterior screws and adhesive. Keeping everything square was critical at this stage.
3. Adding the Plywood Decking
The 15/32″ plywood was secured across the top of the frame, creating a solid platform to build on. I purchased 3 4’x8′ sheets and cut one in half. The actual foundation is 6’x8′ but the trailer will be 10′ long when complete.
4. Installing the Insulation
Rigid foam insulation was cut to size and placed between framing members to help regulate interior temperature. I also used spray foam between the joists for added protection.

What’s Next in the Prairie 610 Build Series
With the foundation complete, the next step is to fabricate the steel trailer frame. After that, the walls will start going up, and the Prairie 610 will really take shape. I am doing this at my own pace and recording the results. I figure I have some ideas I think would be neat to share with the community and possibly create a community of my own.
